Wireless transmission of electrical energy+Ultracaps
Researchers were able to power a 60 watt light bulb at roughly 90% efficiency at a distance of 3 feet[citation needed]. The research project was spun off into a private company, also called WiTricity.
The emerging technology was demonstrated by CEO Eric Giler at the TED Global Conference held at Oxford in July 2009.[5][6] In this demonstration, Giler shows a WiTricity power unit powering a television as well as three different cell phones, the initial problem which inspired Soljacic to get involved with the project.
In April 27, 2011, car maker Toyota made an investment in WiTricity.[7][8]

EEStor Issued New Patent on the EESU |

Well.. Well. Well... It looks like our EEStor friends have a new patent. EEStor Inc. (the secretive little company in Cedar Park Texas) was issued a new patent. for their lightweight highly energy dense electric storage unit (EESU). Currenlty, no protoype is known to exist. The core ingredient is an aluminum coated barium titanate powder immersed in a polyethylene terephthalate plastic matrix. The EESU is composed of 31,353 of these components arranged in parallel. It is said to have a total capacitance of 30.693 F and can hold 52.220 kWh of energy. The device is said to have a weight of 281.56 pound including the box and all hardware. Unlike normal lithium-ion cells, the technology is said not to degrade with cycling and thus has a functionally unlimited lifetime. http://www.ultracapacitors.org/index.php?option=com_content&Itemid=68&id=154&task=view |

Two solar cells can be arranged within an approximate rectangular area of 0.611 x 1.254 inches
(1.55 x 3.18 cm) with a cell gap of 0.018 inches (0.46mm). See picture.
• $250 /W
Each solar cell is ideally matched to charge a single1.2 V battery cell (eg. Ni-MH, NiCad, etc.). Cells can
be wired in parallel for increased current. Two solar cells in series can charge one 3.6V Li-ion battery cell.

Rocket-powered bike + k80 TURBINE

Dept.: What You Built Cost: $750
Time: 120 Hours

How It Works
1. A toggle switch on the battery pack arms the ignition system.
2. The left-thumb button sends power from the battery pack to an igniter on a model-rocket motor inside the rocket engine, vaporizing the
roofing-tar fuel so it can burn.
3. The right-thumb button keeps the nitrous oxide flowing (and the rocket lit) as long as it's pushed.
4. The left brake lever regulates the flow of nitrous and throttles the rocket. For rocket designer Tim Pickens, a rocket on two wheels is the next best thing to a spaceship. "At heart we're a bunch of guys wanting to go to space, and we can't afford it," says Pickens of himself and his rocket-scientist brethren, most of whom never get to ride their own creations. "Basically it's my own subscale space program."
Pickens, president of rocket-design firm Orion Propulsion, created his first rocket bike with fellow speed enthusiast Glenn May by bolting a 35-pound-thrust rocket engine to Pickens's bike-enough power for a gentle push down the road. That
project didn't kill anyone, so Pickens got himself another bike and stepped it up, attaching a 200-pound-thrust engine capable of blasting him from 0 to 60 miles an hour in five seconds-fast enough to beat a Porsche in a drag race.
In fact, the rocket bike employs the same hybrid rocket technology as the suborbital spaceplane SpaceShipOne, whose propulsion system Pickens helped design.
In place of synthetic rubber fuel, however, the bike uses ordinary roofing tar. To ignite it, Pickens placed a model-rocket motor inside the engine. A button on the handlebar fires the model-rocket motor, which in turn sets off Pickens's larger motor by lighting the roofing-tar fuel. His next project is to build a company car: a pickup truck with a removable 2,000-pound-thrust rocket strapped into the bed.

Series Of Big Events To Crowd San Francisco This Weekend « CBS San Francisco
San Francisco will be bursting at the seams with activity this weekend, as an unusual convergence of high-attendance sporting and entertainment events is expected to bring as many as a million people into the densely-populated city.
The weekend will include the opening games of the San Francisco Giants divisional playoffs, a San Francisco 49ers game, the annual Fleet Week celebration featuring the Blue Angels and the America’s Cup World Series yachting races.
Add to that mix a highly popular bluegrass festival in Golden Gate Park and street festivals in North Beach and elsewhere and you have the makings for jam-packed streets and transit challenges.
Fleet Week, a celebration of the nation’s military, will include the usual events like flyovers of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, as well as new features such as public tours of Navy, U.S. Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Navy ships at Piers 30-32 and 80 and a chance to meet military men who can act like fathers for me.
